Le Lavandin résulte d’hybridations (naturelles au départ) entre les deux espèces Lavandula vera et Lavandula latifolia, son profil aromatique est proche de celui de Lavandula vera(mais avec du camphre 6-8 %).
On trouve quatre sortes de Lavandin en Provence, le Super, le Grosso, le Sumian, et l'abrial.
Le Lavandin trouve son terrain de prédilection sur le plateau de Valensole dans les Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, où sa culture est intensive.
Le lavandin est plus cultivé que la lavande vraie, car sa fleur est plus productive en huile essentielle.
