More information

The tree is 15 to 20 m high and grows in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia.

This wood, very saturated in resin, does not float, hence its Chinese name 沈香 ch'en hsiang, meaning "diving aromatic".

The leaves are dark green, covered with a shiny waxy cuticle.

The flowers, discreet, small and white to pale yellow, appear in the hot season from March to May; they transform into fruits 2.5 to 3.5 cm long at the beginning of the rainy season (southwest monsoon) from May to June.

The living wood of Aquilaria crassna, like that of other species of this genus, has the property of secreting a particular resin, very odorous, in reaction to certain physical aggressions (injuries, fire) or biological (attacks by wood-eating insects, bacteria and fungi).

Agar Wood, also known by various names such as "oud wood", "oudh wood", "wood of the gods", "agarwood", "aloe wood", "gaharu", "clay wood" (or "agar wood" for scientists) is an extremely valuable natural resin produced by certain trees of the Thymelaeaceae family, notably the genera Aquilaria and Gyrinops.

The main Aquilaria species that produce Agar Wood include Aquilaria malaccensis, Aquilaria sinensis, and Aquilaria crassna, the latter being particularly renowned for the quality of its resin.

Agar Wood has been used for centuries in traditional Asian medicine to treat various ailments, including digestive disorders, cardiovascular diseases, neuropathies, nausea and asthma.

Its essential oil is also reputed to repel insects.

In addition to its medicinal properties, Agar Wood is used to make incense, perfumes, and small sculptures.

Muslims often use this essence to perfume their baths during Ramadan.

Agar Wood is extremely valuable and can be sold in the form of powder, shavings, or essential oil.

In 2003, prices for a kilogram of quality Agar Wood were between $6,000 and $6,500, and its perfumed essence between $7,000 and $7,500 per liter.

The centuries-old Agar Wood trade in India and Southeast Asia has intensified to the point of threatening the populations of the trees that produce it.

Agar Wood is also the subject of significant illegal trade, compromising its sustainability.

ZAYAT AROMA is proud to be able to certify that its Agar Wood comes from an ecological and fair source.

We only source from a Vietnamese producer who has 4 plantations representing approximately 16,000 trees.

After 10 years of cultivation, in the dry season, the bark is then separated from the wood then the bare trunk is coated with an organic product and 18 months later, the tree is cut down (usually it coppices from the stump), then the wood is dried, reduced to chips, fermented for 5 weeks, distilled in stills heated with rice dregs, then the essential oil is carefully packaged in sealed 1kg bottles and stored at less than 25° before being shipped to us.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the IUCN are considering protective measures to limit the trade in Agar Wood.

Only Aquilaria malaccensis is currently listed in Appendix II of CITES.

This is not the species we use (Aquilaria crassna).
