More information

Lavandin is one of the hundreds of varieties of "lavender" that exist all over the world.

Its botanical Latin name varies according to the authors, we find among these: Lavandula x burnatii, Lavandula x hybrida, Lavandula × intermedia or even Lavandula burnatii super, or even, Lavandula hybrida.

In botany the "X" in the middle of the name means that it is a cross between two species, this cross may be natural (this is the case of lavandin) or made by man.

Main components of essential oil

  • Esters: 25-35% linalyl acetate, lavandulyl acetate, hexyl butyrate
  • Monoterpene alcohols: linalool 30-35%, borneol
  • Sesquiterpenes: beta-caryophyllene
  • Monoterpenes: cis-beta-ocymene
  • Camphor 5-8%, limonene, 1,8-cineole

Lavandin results from hybridizations (natural at the start) between the two species Lavandula vera and Lavandula latifolia, its aromatic profile is close to that of Lavandula vera (but with 6-8% camphor).
There are four kinds of Lavandin in Provence, Super, Grosso, Sumian, and Abrial. Lavandin finds its favorite ground on the plateau of Valensole in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, where its cultivation is intensive.
Lavandin is more cultivated than true lavender, because its flower is more productive in essential oil.
