More information

It is the bay leaf of your small simmered dishes, that of comforting stews, homemade pâtés, it is also called common bay or laurel sauce.

It stimulates fat digestion.

The laurel is in all the Mediterranean gardens, it is a beautiful tree with a dark gray and smooth bark, its leaves are shiny, alternate, in the shape of a spearhead, with small undulations all around.

When you crumple them, the characteristic smell of bay leaves so appreciated in the kitchen is released.

It makes it possible to create beautiful, fragrant and impassable hedges, but it does not withstand very cold weather.

Apart from its culinary use, it was also famous in ancient Greece for favoring oracles of divination by the Pythia of Delphi and was the consecrated plant of the Vestal Virgins.

Wreaths were braided with its branches to cap the winners and this tradition gave the baccalaureate (where we find the word "laurel").

In addition to its leaves, its essential oil is also used, the composition of which is as follows:

  • Terpene oxides: 1.8 cineole (30-70%), beta-caryophyllene oxide
  • Monoterpene alcohols: linalool, alpha-terpineol, terpinene-1-ol-4
  • Esters: terpenyl acetate, linalyl acetate
  • Sesquiterpene lactone: costunolide
  • Monoterpenes: alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, paracymene, sabinene
  • Sesquiterpenes (alpha-copaene, allo-aromadendrene)
  • Eugenol, methyl eugenol, beta-eudesmol, 1 (12), 8 (15)-caryophylladiene-9alpha-ol in small amount
