Words by Mikaël

The Yellow Birch, Betula alleghaniensis, has been the official emblematic tree of Quebec since November 17, 1993 and is present in greater numbers in the forests of Quebec than anywhere else in the world.

Native to northeastern North America, this largest of the Birch trees in eastern Canada, can reach a height of 30 meters and can live up to 150 years, sometimes more.

Its twigs have a minty wintergreen flavour and its buds are characterized by its two shades of brown and dark yellow.

In the Innu language, it is called winen.

Indigenous people used the leaves as an anti-inflammatory tea and the wood to make utilitarian and ritual objects.

In an oil based preparation, the essential oil, strongly composed of methyl salicylate, is traditionally recommended in case of muscular or joint discomfort.

Unfortunately certain forestry practices, have made it difficult today for the Yellow Birch to regenerate itself in our forests. This absence explains the almost dizzying price of essential oil.

Fortunately the hydrosol retains some of the oil’s capabilities and can be used as an addition to therapeutic baths, compresses, and as a rinse in oral and hair care.

Words by Anny Schneider

The hydrosol of yellow birch, our Quebec provincial tree, is a painkiller sweet for joints, muscles and inflamed nerves.

Like all birch trees, it is also a lymphatic drainer and a gentle moisturizer, and you can even ingest its floral water to hydrate and refresh or even spray the face.

Thanks to the methyl salicylate it contains, the yellow birch is used as a deodorant in candies, toothpastes and chewing gums.

Origin

This hydrosol of yellow birch from Canada is distilled from the bark of the tree emblem of Quebec.

Cautions

Keep away from children, air, heat and light.

More information

Birch hydrosol should not be confused with birch water, they are 2 totally different products, one is the result of distillation - hydrosol - while the other is the sap of tree harvested in spring.
