Castor wax or hydrogenated castor oil (HCO) is a hard, brittle vegetable wax derived from castor oil that has the appearance of solid white flakes with little or no odor.
In the chemical sense, castor wax is actually a triglyceride and not a wax, that is, a fatty acid ester of a fatty alcohol.
In cosmetics, castor wax is used in skin cleansing products.
The fine particles have a cleansing and exfoliating effect.
In addition to its nourishing and revitalizing function, castor wax also promotes hair regrowth and also provides volume. It is also used to strengthen and lengthen eyelashes and eyebrows.
It nourishes and also acts as a thickener and a hydrating agent.
Castor wax like other hydrogenated oils are commonly used in cosmetics due to their ability to help form emulsions by reducing the surface tension of the substances being emulsified.
Castor wax provides products with texture, consistency and stability.
Melting castor wax requires a simmering water bath (ideally 90°C) or a heating bowl (stirring while heating).
Castor wax can be heated beyond its melting point (85 to 88 degrees Celsius.) to create a liquid and the product will harden again once the temperature cools.
